दूर्वा (Cynodon dactylon) – पावन प्राणतत्त्व की अभिव्यक्ति

प्रस्तावना

दूर्वा, जिसे सामान्यतः दूब्रा अथवा दूब घास कहा जाता है, वैदिक सनातन परंपरा में परम पावन वनस्पति रूपेण प्रतिष्ठित है। यज्ञीय अनुष्ठानों, गणपतिपूजन, आयुर्वेदिक चिकित्सापद्धति तथा आध्यात्मिक साधना में इसका विशिष्ट एवं अविच्छिन्न स्थान प्रतिपादित है। दूर्वा दीर्घायुष्यता, पवित्रता, पुनरुत्थानशीलता तथा दिव्य अनुग्रह की सजीव प्रतीक मानी गई है।

वैदिक निरूपण

तैत्तिरीय आरण्यक (महानारायण उपनिषद) में दूर्वा का उल्लेख इस प्रकार प्राप्त होता है—

“सहस्रशीर्षा दूर्वा सहस्राक्षा सहस्रपात्।”

भावार्थ:

दूर्वा को सहस्रशीर्ष, सहस्रनेत्र तथा सहस्रपादयुक्त कहा गया है, जो इसकी अनंत जीवनशक्ति, सर्वव्यापकता तथा ब्रह्मांडीय सत्ता का द्योतक है।

उपनिषदिक प्रतिपादन

दूर्वा प्राणतत्त्व की मूर्त अभिव्यक्ति है। छेदन के उपरांत भी इसका पुनरुत्थान आत्मतत्त्व की अविनाशिता का प्रत्यक्ष प्रमाण प्रस्तुत करता है। यथा दूर्वा न विनश्यति, तथैव आत्मा जन्म-मरणातीत एवं सनातन है।

गणपतितत्त्व में दूर्वा

गणेशपुराणे निर्दिष्टं यत् एकविंशति दूर्वाङ्कुरैः विघ्नहर्ता गणपति शीघ्रं प्रसन्नो भवति—

“दूर्वाङ्कुरैः पूजितो गणेशः शीघ्रं प्रसन्नो भवति।”

तात्त्विक संकेत:

एकविंशति संख्या त्रिगुण एवं सप्तलोक के समन्वित संतुलन का प्रतीक है, जो इन्द्रियनिग्रह तथा विघ्नविनाश का द्योतक है।

पौराणिक महिमा

स्कन्दपुराण तथा पद्मपुराण में दूर्वा को समुद्रमन्थनसम्भवा अमृतोत्पन्न वनस्पति रूपेण वर्णित किया गया है। यह दैवी ऊष्मा का शमन कर सृष्टि तथा शरीर दोनों में संतुलन की स्थापना करती है।

आयुर्वेदिक विवेचन

रस: तिक्त, कषाय

वीर्य: शीत

दोषप्रभाव: पित्त-कफशामक

औषधगुण:

दूर्वा रक्तस्तम्भक, व्रणरोपक तथा शीतलप्रदा मानी गई है। प्रमेह, रक्तस्राव, मूत्रकृच्छ्र, ज्वर तथा त्वचारोगों में इसका हितकारी प्रभाव प्रतिपादित है।

आध्यात्मिक उपसंहार

दूर्वा धैर्य, विनय एवं समर्पण का शिक्षण करती है। भूमिसमीप स्थित होकर भी यह जीवन्त रहती है तथा देवचरणेषु अर्पिता होकर साधक को स्थैर्य एवं विनम्रता का बोध कराती है। इस प्रकार दूर्वा न केवल वनस्पति, अपितु आध्यात्मिक साधना का प्रतीक बन जाती है।

Durva (Cynodon dactylon) – Manifestation of Sacred Vital Principle

Introduction

Durva, commonly known as Dubra or sacred grass, is revered in the Vedic Sanātana tradition as a supremely sacred plant. It holds an integral place in sacrificial rites, Ganapati worship, Ayurvedic therapeutics, and spiritual disciplines. Durva is regarded as a living symbol of longevity, purity, regenerative power, and divine grace.

Vedic Exposition

In the Taittiriya Aranyaka (Mahanarayana Upanishad), Durva is described as:

“सहस्रशीर्षा दूर्वा सहस्राक्षा सहस्रपात्।”

Meaning:

Durva is depicted as possessing a thousand heads, eyes, and feet—symbolizing infinite vitality, omnipresence, and cosmic manifestation.

Upanishadic Interpretation

Durva embodies the vital principle (Prana-tattva). Its ability to regenerate even after being cut illustrates the imperishability of the Self. Just as Durva does not perish, so too the Atman transcends birth and death.

Durva in the Principle of Ganapati

The Ganesha Purana declares that Lord Ganapati becomes swiftly pleased when worshipped with twenty-one blades of Durva.

“दूर्वाङ्कुरैः पूजितो गणेशः शीघ्रं प्रसन्नो भवति।”

Philosophical Significance:

The number twenty-one symbolizes the harmony of the three gunas and the seven realms, indicating mastery over obstacles and sensory impulses.

Puranic Reverence

The Skanda Purana and Padma Purana describe Durva as born of the nectar that emerged during the churning of the cosmic ocean. It is said to pacify divine heat and establish balance within both the cosmos and the human body.

Dosha Action: Pacifies Pitta and Kapha

Therapeutic Properties:

Durva is recognized as hemostatic, wound-healing, and cooling in nature. It is beneficial in conditions such as bleeding disorders, diabetes, urinary ailments, fever, and skin diseases.

Spiritual Conclusion

Durva imparts the virtues of endurance, humility, and surrender. Though it grows close to the earth, it thrives resiliently and is offered at the divine feet, symbolizing steadiness and devotion. Thus, Durva transcends its botanical identity to become a spiritual emblem.
